Frequently asked

How is the IQ score calculated?

GridIQ uses an Elo-inspired rating calibrated to the real IQ distribution (mean 100, standard deviation 15). Each puzzle gives you a raw score based on accuracy, time, difficulty, and any penalties (hint, undo).

That raw score is converted to a z-score and compared to the z-score expected for your current IQ. If you outperform expectations, your IQ goes up. If you underperform, it drops. The size of the change depends on a K-factor that's higher when you're new (faster calibration) and lower once you're established (more stable rating).

The system is bidirectional — bad games actually drop your score. That's the design, not a bug. Real Elo math.

Why is my IQ locked?

Your IQ is hidden until you've completed 5 IQ-affecting games (daily or challenge — practice doesn't count). The 5-game threshold gives the system enough data to land your initial rating somewhere sensible instead of starting you randomly.

Until then, the app shows progress dots so you know how many games are left until reveal.

I missed a day — did I lose my streak?

If you have a streak freeze available, it auto-applies when you next play and bridges the missed day. You earn one freeze every 7 streak days, capped at 3.

If you missed two or more days, or missed one day without a freeze available, your streak resets to 1 on your next daily completion.

Achievement badges (Warming Up, On Fire, etc.) stay unlocked permanently once you've earned them — they're based on your best-ever streak, not your current one.

How do I delete my account and all my data?

Email anay@gridiq.quest with the subject "Delete account" from the email address tied to your Google sign-in. We verify the request and delete all your data within 30 days.

Deletion includes: your account row, all game results, your push token, your display name, and your leaderboard entry. Anonymous usage events keep aggregating with no link back to you.

I'm not getting daily reminder emails or push notifications.

Check that you're signed in and that Daily reminders is toggled on in Settings.

For push: make sure you've granted notification permission in iOS Settings → GridIQ → Notifications, and that "Allow Notifications" plus Banner Style are enabled.

For email: check your spam folder. The sender is play@gridiq.quest.

If both still fail after 48 hours of meeting the conditions, email us with your Google email address and we'll investigate.

Why doesn't sign-in work on Expo Go?

Google's OAuth policy doesn't allow our app's sign-in to run inside the Expo Go developer app — it requires the production bundle. Sign-in works fine in the TestFlight build and on the web app.

How do friend challenges work?

After completing any IQ-counting game, tap "Challenge a friend" on the Result screen. Your phone's native Share Sheet opens with a link like gridiq.quest/c/... that encodes the exact puzzle you just solved plus your score.

When your friend opens that link, they see a VS card with your stats and can accept — they then play the identical puzzle and compare scores head-to-head.

Friend challenges affect both players' IQ scores. Beating someone higher-rated raises yours more.

Can I play offline?

Puzzle generation runs locally on your device, so you can play the daily and practice modes without internet. Your game results queue locally and sync to your account once you're back online.

Leaderboard, friend challenges, and sign-in require an internet connection.

Is my data shared with anyone?

We use a small set of third-party processors (Google sign-in, Supabase storage, Firebase auth, Resend email, Expo push, PostHog analytics) — and that's it. We don't sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.

Full details in our privacy policy.

Will there be ads or paid features?

No ads. No in-app purchases. No subscriptions. GridIQ is free and stays that way.
